Question 98 – What is Christianity's viewpoint on UFOs?
Dear reader, I believe that the highly popular and controversial question surrounding UFOs and the existence of extraterrestrials should not be overlooked in this book. It seems that more people in our country believe in the existence of extraterrestrials than in God Himself. Sometimes, the alleged existence of extraterrestrials is even used as an argument against the validity of Christianity or as a potential alternative to blind evolution.
I should clarify from the outset that I do not intend to discuss the general question of whether other civilizations might exist outside our solar system. Individuals, including Christians, have varied opinions on this matter, and the Bible does not explicitly or plainly address this topic. If life was created by God, He could have created just one inhabited planet or perhaps thousands. There is no need to seek popular statistical probabilities here, as they are utterly irrelevant. If God decided to create billions of planets with only one harboring human civilization, that is His decision. We can perceive the vastness and majesty of the universe as an awe-inspiring testament to His power and glory, rather than senselessly wasted space as some argue.
However, I would like to focus on the question of whether any extraterrestrial civilizations have visited our planet or continue to do so—or whether they are even in direct contact with certain individuals or nations. Numerous undeniable phenomena motivate me to explore this inquiry, leading to questions that can be labeled as unexplained and mysterious. These include:
1) UFO sightings
Thousands of unidentified flying objects are reported worldwide, their origins unknown to observers. These UFO manifestations involve many paradoxes, leaving behind both material and immaterial evidence. Material evidence can be measured and assessed through scientific methods (e.g., at landing sites—heat radiation, altered electromagnetic fields that disable vehicles, and visible traces of damaged grass. These can also be detected by radar). Immaterial evidence, however, cannot be scientifically examined and relies on eyewitness testimonies. Typical examples might include the invisibility of these objects, acceleration or deceleration defying known physical laws, and passing through material objects or walls. Such sightings may coincide with abductions or encounters with unknown beings.
2) UFO Abductions
Throughout the world, including the United States and Europe, thousands of cases of abductions by unknown entities are documented, often involving experiments (sometimes painful) on living individuals. The scenarios are frequently similar—abductions occur at night, and the victim is awakened by a light and subsequently completely paralyzed, then transported to an unknown location. The victim might undergo various tests (mental, physical, etc.), and experience feelings of confusion, disorientation, overwhelming fear, and helplessness. Abductors commonly focus on the human reproductive system for biological experiments (gynecological exams, egg or sperm extractions, and the introduction of foreign objects). Females might have embryos removed that were likely created experimentally in previous abductions. Abductors communicate telepathically and paralyze individuals with a mere gaze. Often, victims do not remember the abductions at all (sometimes only under hypnosis) [18, 19].
3) Animal mutilations
A widespread and documented phenomenon persisting for centuries, where livestock (often cattle or horses) are found dead and mutilated in various precise ways, with key organs and tissues removed using seemingly advanced technology. Astonishingly, these carcasses are often bloodless, with no trace of blood found nearby. Sightings of UFOs near such discoveries are not uncommon [20].
4) Crop circles
Around the world, mysterious geometric patterns appear in crops or other substrates. These formations often carry symbolic messages and materialize rapidly.
These phenomena (and many others) have become fertile ground for numerous conspiracy theories and so-called "surefire" truths regarding UFOs (e.g., extraterrestrials planted us on Earth as "guinea pigs," we are visited by up to 80 different alien races, they live among us, collaborate with us on scientific discoveries, disguise themselves as politicians and notable figures with the aim of world domination, created our moon, or might be visitors from the future). Entering the term "UFO" or "extraterrestrials" in an internet search will overwhelm you with thousands of articles, documents, and opinions. Many individuals are utterly captivated, fascinated by this phenomenon, and some even construct independent philosophies and religions around it. One of the world's most well-known proponents of such theories, and a favorite of millions of readers, is Erich von Däniken.
Attempts at Explanation
To be strictly thorough, we would need to dissect and propose explanations for each of the above phenomena individually. However, space does not permit such an endeavor. Given numerous evidences and indications, one might surmise that the originator of these phenomena is often the same across cases. Therefore, I shall treat them as a singular whole. Although thousands of highly credible witnesses exist, including high-ranking military, police, and political officials, the scientific community largely dismisses UFOs. It remains a highly controversial subject that is challenging to capture and analyze through scientific methods. Scientists harbor fears of reputational damage and ridicule. As a result, it is estimated that merely 10% of all UFO sightings are officially reported.
Despite these risks and the veil of enigma surrounding this phenomenon, the topic garners vast media interest and is subject to investigation by individual governmental programs. Countries establish various projects and commissions to earnestly address the extraterrestrial question within the realm of national security.
In most UFO sightings, efforts are made to find plausible natural explanations (though this doesn't prove their truthfulness). Many cases remain mysterious and devoid of any conventional explanations.
Generally Proposed Explanations:
Observations of natural objects (rockets, satellites, planes, the Moon, planets, meteors...)
Observations of rare atmospheric phenomena or the existence of unknown natural events
Tests of highly classified military aircraft
Hallucinations
False testimonies or photo montages aimed at drawing attention or gaining profit
Various errors during photography and film development
Visits from future humans
Visits from extraterrestrial civilizations
Personally, I am convinced that many observed and reported UFO sightings indeed result from the aforementioned natural causes, including sensationalist hoaxes or strictly secret military experiments. Despite all this, a closer study of the issue reveals that not all cases can be so easily explained. Evidence seems to lean more toward the "extraterrestrial" hypothesis. Regarding cases of abductions or mysterious livestock mutilations, natural explanations become even scarcer. I must emphasize once again that many abduction victims and UFO witnesses are, from a psychological standpoint, highly credible individuals who cannot be dismissed as unstable, psychopathic, or dubious. This credibility leads many researchers to take their testimonies seriously. While some witnesses may also be unreliable, it does not imply they are not conveying truthful and genuine experiences.
Thus, I am personally convinced that "something" indeed visits our planet, truly abducts human beings, and attempts to draw attention through various phenomena, such as crop circles. From this perspective, another very important question arises: Are these mysteries genuinely the work of extraterrestrial civilizations? What do they want? What are their intentions? Why are they conducting experiments on us? Why are they playing hide-and-seek with us?
Two Fundamental Views on the Nature of UFOs
From a research perspective, there are several opinions regarding the identity and nature of these beings and visitors. However, they can be somewhat simplistically summarized into two fundamental hypotheses: the extraterrestrial hypothesis and the interdimensional hypothesis.
The extraterrestrial hypothesis suggests that these beings originate from other planets or universes, aligning with what these entities often claim themselves and with general public opinion. In contrast, the interdimensional hypothesis posits that the entire UFO phenomenon is not the result of extraterrestrial civilizations but rather visitors from other (spiritual) dimensions or physical realities. One of the main proponents of this hypothesis is the renowned scientist and ufologist (not a Christian!) Dr. Jacques Vallée, who studied the phenomenon extensively for many years.
There are numerous reasons why these researchers and scientists reject the extraterrestrial hypothesis, insisting that these cannot be visitors from other planets. A few of these reasons are as follows:
- There have been many "extraterrestrials" throughout millennia, yet they seem unable to fulfill their mission, which should not be problematic from a practical perspective. Moreover, they often engage in utterly nonsensical activities and observations, frequently lying to people and providing false information.
- Many abduction victims report that the abductions are often a grand show.
- The behavior of the captors reflects the expectations of their victims, particularly their intelligence and era. Victims of abductions from long ago describe, for instance, spacecraft interiors as very antiquated, with mechanical elements. Modern spacecraft, however, are described as having an "electronic" interior. In other words, the content witnessed by the observer is tailored to them.
- The diversity in appearance and behavior of these beings is high. Some have humanoid features, others resemble dwarfs from legends, and some appear like mythological or religious monsters.
- Victims and observers often perceive these beings as hostile. It is a horrific and terrifying event for them. Especially abduction victims experience dreadful physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual consequences. In other words, the aim of these beings is to terrorize people.
Dr. Vallée's very intriguing finding is that the entire UFO phenomenon points to an intent to deceive and bewilder humanity [18]. For example, flying unidentified objects often play with pilots, and either they are so stupid that they get detected, or they want to be seen but don't want to be caught. These scientists and proponents of the interdimensional hypothesis, however, do not know why. They reach a conclusion that aligns with the Bible, though without further spiritual discernment.
Answer to the "Why?" from a Christian Perspective
Yes—surely, it will not surprise you that behind this phenomenon, too, are demonic entities led by Satan! There is an abundance of entirely evident evidence and clearly apparent connections to occultism and spiritism supporting this conclusion. Here are just a few:
- In UFO sightings, it is evident that these entities (or their flying machines) want to be seen, but do not want to be captured. They merely wish to draw attention to themselves.
- These entities are hostile to humans; they emanate terror and darkness. People are frightened and paralyzed simply by looking into their eyes. Many describe that evil radiates directly from them. In some cases, they are entities resembling creatures from non-Christian (demonic) religions.
- There are also abductions by so-called "snatching" from the physical body, where victims find themselves in another location in a spiritual reality.
- These beings often communicate telepathically and may possess other paranormal abilities. Abductions are accompanied by supernatural phenomena typical of witchcraft and occultism.
- Many occultists communicate with these beings through extrasensory channeling (this method of "telepathic" communication is also used for communication with spirits, angels, spirit guides, etc.).
- The more occult activity in an area, the more UFOs are observed in such regions. UFOs are also closely linked to the false philosophy of the New Age and to spiritism.
- These entities frequently lie to people, seeking to confuse them, causing them pain and terrorizing them. The aftermath of UFO encounters and abductions by "extraterrestrials" is horrifying. People suffer nightmares and severe problems throughout their lives.
- The whole phenomenon indicates that Satan seeks to divert our attention from God and to terrorize us.
Lastly, it is important to mention that many Christians testify to having been able to immediately interrupt and thwart abductions by these beings through the power and authority of the name of Jesus. There are hundreds of testimonies where Christians (and even non-Christians) call upon Jesus during abductions, or directly rebuke these attackers in the name of Jesus Christ, and these aggressors vanish immediately. There are also known cases where people have been regularly abducted for many years, but after accepting Jesus as their Lord, they experience deliverance, and the attacks cease. The Bible itself confirms that demons can materialize and act on the physical level.
Why Sexual Experiments?
Lastly, I'd like to briefly address the constant experiments with a sexual and reproductive undertone. It almost seems as if demons are attempting genetic crossbreeding with human beings. Perhaps this notion seems far-fetched, yet the Bible likely describes the crossbreeding of demons with humans.
"The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown." (Genesis 6:4)
Some Christians believe that it was this very crossbreeding of demons with humans that led to and facilitated worldwide downfall, consequently leading God to destroy the world with a global flood. God prevented further crossbreeding. However, the Bible also speaks of the Antichrist, who is to come in the last days and deceive all humanity. Based on this, some believe that this Antichrist is not to be an ordinary human being, but Satan himself, or his demon crossbred with a human. This may also be the reason why demons are so intensely attempting to genetically breach the once-closed possibility of crossbreeding with humans. Whatever the mysterious reason for their experiments, we have managed to uncover the origin of the "aliens"…
Summation
Based on abundant evidence, it can be concluded that the UFO phenomenon has nothing to do with visits from extraterrestrial civilizations. Even some prominent non-Christian researchers conclude from their studies that these are unknown visitors from other realities, not beings from other galaxies. From a Christian perspective, it is clear which reality is involved—the spiritual demonic world. This conclusion also underscores the fact that the attacks of these "extraterrestrials" can be repelled in the authority of the name of Jesus Christ.
