Question 89 – Is it wrong to have supernatural powers?
Controlling the elements, manipulating objects without touching them, seeing what others cannot, hearing what others do not, accessing a reality beyond dreams, mastering telepathy, connecting to a source of diverse knowledge, imposing your will on others, possessing healing abilities that benefit others, wielding strength beyond your physical limits. Who wouldn't be tempted by these and myriad other abilities? Especially in this media-driven age, where such abilities are widely glorified in films, series, and fairy tales, the allure is even more enticing. Exciting and mysterious, indeed. Are the possibilities of supernatural powers real and worth pursuing? Do humans truly possess a sixth sense, a third eye, or dormant supernatural power? Or better yet—if you've discovered that you're sensitive to occult (hidden) forces, is this realization acceptable?
I regret to inform you—no, supernatural abilities are extremely dangerous for you and those around you. For some reason (perhaps through your own fault, or maybe through your parents'), you have come under the influence of demonic entities that enable you to wield abilities that transcend our natural reality. You have become a victim of a spiritual deception, yet God offers you hope...
Former Occultists and Magicians Speak Out
We could engage in lengthy discussions about various supernatural abilities, analyze their occurrence, observe the fruits of their effects, or simply remind ourselves of the negative stance God takes on the matter, as evident from Biblical testimonies. I believe one of the most compelling arguments is the personal experience of tens of thousands of Christians who, in their past, dabbled in various occult practices—such as card reading, energy healing, horoscopes, witchcraft, shamanism, or even the worship of Satan. All these individuals offer a stark warning based on their firsthand experiences with supernatural abilities. Each has a unique personal story, often chilling to hear. Some inherited their abilities due to ancestral curses from predecessors who practiced occultism, others acquired them through experimental dabbling in occult practices, while some consciously accepted them from spiritual beings. Though the methods of acquiring power may vary, the continuation of their magical practice often shares a common denominator—this power engulfs and controls them, alters their character, and often destroys their life, marriage, relationships, and sometimes drives them to the brink of madness. However, since they have become Christians, they can also testify to God's love and supernatural deliverance through the power of Jesus Christ, who freed them from demonic bonds. They now experience freedom, balance, and the love they once so desperately sought.
One such person, Ms. Zdenka, recounts her story:
"Soon I attended a retreat where they practiced yoga, taught us to locate geopathic zones, find water, determine lucky and unlucky days according to birthdates, and other activities like clairvoyance, fortune-telling, palmistry, etc. Over time, we began practicing everything. Initially, I needed various tools—spirals, pendulums, and other items, but eventually, my hands were enough.
I discovered I was extremely sensitive to these things… I started seeing the radiation emitted by people. According to the color of the aura, I could determine how sick a person was, or I diagnosed illnesses with a pendulum. I was rarely wrong. Once, a spirit appeared to us, saying the world would end." The deeper she delved into witchcraft, the more destructive its influence became on her: "Strange things started happening in my life. I was extremely tired and it only worsened. I was losing the will to live. I felt physically and mentally ill.
I had thoughts of ending my life. Walking past water, something whispered, 'jump in and you'll find peace'. Passing large vehicles, I was drawn towards them. Only because I have three children did I refrain. These were truly difficult battles. Life had grown unbearable for me." When later confronted with the truth of God's gospel, the demons tried even harder to destroy her: "Various figures appeared to me, something strangled me, I heard distinct voices. On one hand, they threatened me, on the other, they made promises. One morning, I wanted to go to work but was so weak I couldn't get out of bed. I felt sick and began losing consciousness. I felt like I was burning inside. Two days before it happened, I started sensing a horrible smoke that no one else smelled. I realized it was connected to the forces that once aided me and now attacked me!"
During an intense spiritual struggle, where she felt as if she were literally dying, she called out to God: "God forgive me, and take care of my children so that my guilt doesn't fall on them, that they aren't punished for my sake. I asked Lord Jesus not to let my soul go to hell but to take it to Him. Something extraordinary happened, something hard to put into words. I felt as if someone had taken me into their arms. The unpleasant fall stopped… Gradually all the attacks ceased. I realized that God had saved me." After accepting Jesus into her life, she experienced liberation from all that evil she unknowingly got involved in. She concludes her testimony about God's love and power in this way: "Perhaps you, too, are trapped by occult forces, indulging in fortune-telling, clairvoyance, esotericism, witchcraft, astrology, spiritism, parapsychology, or other practices. Don't take my experiences lightly. What I suffered through, I wouldn't wish on anyone. Don't hesitate to ask Lord Jesus Christ to enter your life and free you. Only He has such power. Only He can help you." [2]
Ms. Zdenka's case is not unique. There are thousands of similar life stories. People often do not realize the forces they are dealing with and that they are engaging in something dangerous and wrong. In some cases, they are very sincere individuals who genuinely wish to help others with their abilities. Yet, they are deceived. Satan knows very well that witchcraft is captivating and alluring to us, feeding our pride and offering a power that cannot genuinely be ours.
Supernatural Abilities Are Never Truly Ours! They Are Always Lent to Us by a Higher Intelligence!
Many people believe that supernatural abilities were once a common part of human experience in ancient times and that we lost them, as evidenced, among other things, by the notion that we currently use only about 10% of our brain. If we work on our spiritual development, we can rediscover remarkable abilities buried deep inside each of us. However, this is one of the most widespread fallacies.
Although the brain remains largely unexplored, current science demonstrates that the 10% myth is a complete misunderstanding. On the contrary, evidence suggests that we are constantly utilizing a vast majority of our brain [3].
Advocates of supernatural abilities sometimes maintain that for these abilities to be effective, one must connect to cosmic consciousness, universal energy, ancestral spirits, God Himself, or engage in numerous magical rituals. Notably, their believers can hold any belief, and these abilities still appear. Why? The answer is clear—demons are indifferent to what and how you believe; all they need is your consent and pursuit of power beyond the boundaries established by God.
God sternly warns against this but simultaneously offers His love, grace, forgiveness, and liberation from demonic enslavement caused by our involvement in the occult.
Summation
From a Christian perspective, supernatural abilities result from conscious or unconscious connections with the unseen forces of unclean spirits, granting us limited power or causing them to serve us. However, this power is a destructive gift that eventually demands its due. Yet, Jesus' blood was shed for all people—even for those ruled by unclean forces—and we can find freedom and forgiveness in Him.
